European leaders came out with sweeping support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the explosive Oval Office meeting in which President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance gave harsh reprimands and accused him of being \u2018disrespectful.\u2019<\/p>\n
Several leaders took to social media to back Ukraine and to remind Washington that Russian President Vladimir Putin is the Russia-Ukraine conflict\u2019s \u2018aggressor,\u2019 not Zelenskyy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The EU\u2019s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, had some of the strongest words of rebuke for Trump and said, \u2018We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the aggressor.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader,\u2019 she added. \u00a0\u2018It\u2019s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a victim: Ukraine,\u2019 said French President Emmanuel Macron, who just met with Trump this week in Washington, D.C. \u2018We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago \u2014 and to keep doing so.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018By \u2018we,\u2019 I mean the Americans, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese, and many others,\u2019 he added. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Though U.K. Prime Minister Kier Starmer, who also met with Trump this week, has remained publicly silent following the geopolitical fallout, the leader of the U.K.\u2019s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, showed her\u00a0support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\u2018Respectable diplomacy is essential for peace,\u2019 she said in a post on X. \u2018We need to remember that the villain is the war criminal President Putin who illegally invaded another sovereign country \u2013 Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018A divided West only benefits Russia,\u2019 she continued. \u2018Any peace agreement must be negotiated with Ukraine at the table, and will need security guarantees. We cannot lose sight of the fact that tonight air raid sirens are sounding in Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n\n
\u2018What we saw from the White House today is serious and disheartening,\u2019 Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement, according to Reuters. \u2018Ukraine still needs the U.S.\u2019s support, and Ukraine\u2019s security and future are also important to the U.S. and to Europe.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018That Trump accuses Zelenskyy of gambling with\u00a0World\u00a0War III is deeply unreasonable and a statement I distance myself from,\u2019 he said. \u2018Norway stands with Ukraine in their struggle for freedom.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018Dear Zelenskyy, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone,\u2019 said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s new conservative leader, incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has said he seeks \u2018independence\u2019 from the U.S., said, \u2018Dear Volodymyr Zelenskyy, we stand with Ukraine in good and in testing times. We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war.\u2019<\/p>\n
Notably, nations that typically stand strong with Trump, like Turkey\u2019s Recep Erdogan and Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, did not release a public statement following the\u00a0day\u2019s events.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Russian officials, however, did voice their support for how the day unfolded.<\/p>\n
Former Russian President and current deputy chair of Russia\u2019s security council, Dmitry Medvedev, took to X to call Zelenskyy an \u2018insolent pig\u2019 and claimed he \u2018finally got a proper slap down in the Oval Office.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018And Donald Trump is right: The Kyiv regime is \u2018gambling with WWIII\u2019,\u2019 he\u00a0added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau threw his weight behind Ukraine as well and said, \u2018Russia illegally and unjustifiably invaded Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018For three years now, Ukrainians have fought with courage and resilience,\u2019 he added, suggesting NATO allies may back Kyiv over Washington. \u2018Their fight for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty is a fight that matters to us all.
