The US Department of Justice has dropped its criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell<\/a>, removing a key obstacle to confirming Kevin Warsh as the next central bank chief.<\/p>\n

Jeanine Pirro said, \u201cI have directed my office to close our investigation as the IG undertakes this inquiry.\u201d She added, \u201cNote well, however, that I will not hesitate to restart a criminal investigation should the facts warrant doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n

The probe had examined whether Powell misled Congress over a $2.5 billion renovation project at the Fed\u2019s headquarters. A federal judge had previously quashed subpoenas related to the case, limiting its scope.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect a comprehensive report in short order and am confident the outcome will assist in resolving, once and for all, the questions that led this office to issue subpoenas,\u201d Pirro said.<\/p>\n
